Frequently Asked Questions
What is a magnetic card holder?
A magnetic card holder (also called a one-touch or mag holder) is a rigid acrylic display case that snaps shut with rare-earth magnets, enclosing your card in crystal-clear, UV-protected acrylic on all sides. Unlike toploaders which are open on top, magnetic holders fully encase the card in a sealed, tamper-resistant enclosure. They're the premium display option for cards you want to show off — autographs, numbered parallels, patch cards, and any hit that deserves museum-grade presentation. Full card protection guide.
What PT sizes do your magnetic holders come in?
We carry magnetic holders from 35PT to 360PT, covering every card thickness in the hobby: 35PT for standard base cards and inserts, 55PT for slightly thicker cards, 75PT for jersey/relic cards, 100PT for multi-layer patches, 130PT for thick memorabilia, 180PT for heavy memorabilia, and 260PT and 360PT for the thickest hits in the hobby. Match the PT to your card's thickness for a snug, secure fit with zero internal movement.
Do your magnetic holders have UV protection?
Yes — every Card Shellz magnetic holder includes 100% UV protection built into the acrylic. UV light is the primary cause of card yellowing, ink fading, and surface degradation over time. Our UV-blocking acrylic shields your card from damaging ultraviolet radiation on all sides — top, bottom, and edges.
Are your magnetic holders archival safe?
Yes. Our magnetic holders are made from crystal-clear, acid-free acrylic. They won't off-gas, yellow, or chemically react with card surfaces over time. Cards stored in Card Shellz magnetic holders are safe for indefinite long-term display and storage.
Will the card move around inside the magnetic holder?
No. Card Shellz magnetic holders are precisely engineered for true 3×4" card dimensions. The card sits cleanly and securely without shifting, rubbing, or rattling against the acrylic. This prevents surface wear, corner impact, and the micro-movement that scratches chrome finishes and foil surfaces over time.
What is the Precise-Fit sleeve that comes with 35PT and 55PT holders?
Our 35PT and 55PT magnetic holders include an exclusive Precise-Fit inner sleeve — a thin, perfectly sized sleeve that adds a scratch-blocking layer between the card surface and the acrylic. This is especially important for chrome cards, holofoil, and on-card autographs that can bow slightly and press against the acrylic over time, causing micro-scratches or ink transfer. The Precise-Fit sleeve creates a protective barrier while still allowing the holder to close perfectly flush.
Should I use a penny sleeve inside a magnetic holder?
For chrome cards, holofoil, and on-card autographs this can add an extra layer of protection. These cards can bow slightly, and if the surface presses against the acrylic for extended periods, it can lead to micro-scratches or autograph ink transfer. A penny sleeve or the included Precise-Fit sleeve (on 35PT and 55PT models) creates a barrier that protects the surface. For thicker, board-style cards that stay flat and don't bow, sleeving is less critical — these cards typically don't make constant contact with the holder's acrylic, so surface wear risk is lower. When in doubt, sleeve it.
How do I know which PT magnetic holder fits my card?
Same sizing as toploaders: 35PT for standard base cards, 55PT for slightly thick inserts, 75PT for jersey/relic cards, 100PT for multi-layer patches, 130PT for thick memorabilia, 180PT for heavy hits, 260PT and 360PT for the thickest cards in the hobby. The card should sit flat inside the holder without pressing against the acrylic or rattling around. If the holder won't close flush, your card is too thick — go up one PT size. If the card slides freely with visible gaps, it's too loose — go down one PT size. Read our toploader size guide for further details.
Magnetic holders vs toploaders — which do I need?
Different tools for different jobs. Toploaders are for everyday protection and bulk storage — they're thin, stackable, and cost-effective for large collections. Magnetic holders are for premium display — they provide 360° sealed enclosure, UV protection on all sides, and a museum-grade presentation that toploaders can't match. Use toploaders for your everyday cards. Use magnetic holders for autographs, numbered parallels, patch cards, and any hit you want to set apart and display. Most collectors use both — toploaders for volume, mag holders for hits. Full protection guide.
What are the best magnetic holders for Pokémon cards?
Standard Pokémon cards (V, VMAX, VSTAR, EX, GX, Full Art, Illustration Rare, Alt Art) fit the 35PT magnetic holder. The included Precise-Fit sleeve is especially valuable for Pokémon — modern Pokémon hits have textured surfaces and holofoil patterns that are scratch-prone against bare acrylic. Use the Precise-Fit sleeve or an Easy Glide penny sleeve for these cards. For Pokémon cards displayed near windows or under lights, the 100% UV protection prevents the foil fading and surface yellowing that ruins card value over time. Pokémon card protection guide.
What are the best magnetic holders for sports card autographs and patches?
Depends on the card thickness: standard on-card autographs → 35PT with the Precise-Fit sleeve (critical for protecting autograph ink). Sticker autographs → 55PT if the sticker adds thickness. Jersey/relic cards → 75PT. Multi-layer patches → 100PT. Heavy memorabilia → 130PT or 180PT. For autographs specifically: always use a sleeve between the card and acrylic. Autograph ink — especially on-card signatures — can transfer to acrylic surfaces over time if they're in direct, pressured contact. The Precise-Fit sleeve or a penny sleeve prevents this.
Do you have magnetic holders for booklet cards?
Yes. We carry magnetic double booklet holders in both vertical and horizontal formats for oversized multi-panel booklet cards that don't fit standard 3×4" dimensions. Cards from products like National Treasures, Flawless, and Immaculate often have fold-out booklet designs worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. These deserve proper magnetic protection, not a team bag. Our booklet magnetic holders have noticeably tighter tolerances than Ultra Pro booklet holders — booklet cards stay better centered and more secure with less wobble. Check our full magnetic holders collection for booklet size availability.
How do I protect the outside of my magnetic holder?
Use Glove-Fit Sleeves for Magnetic Holders. They're the best-fitting protective outer sleeves on the market — engineered for a perfectly snug, glass-clear wrap that shields the holder itself from scratches, scuffs, fingerprints, handling wear, and dust without adding bulk or muting the crystal clarity. If you're investing in a magnetic holder for a premium card, protect the holder too. Glove-Fit sleeves keep your magnetic holders in showroom condition whether they're on display, in storage, or being shipped to a buyer.
How do I open and close a magnetic holder without damaging the card?
To open: grip both halves firmly and pull apart at the corner — the magnets will release cleanly. Don't try to pry from the middle or use tools. To close: place your sleeved card in one half, align the other half, and let the magnets pull the halves together. Don't force it shut — the magnets should snap the case closed naturally. If the case won't close flush, your card may be too thick for that PT size. If you hear the magnets click and the edges are seamless, you're good. Handle by the edges of the holder, not the flat faces where fingerprints accumulate.
Can I ship cards in magnetic holders?
Yes, but use proper packaging. Magnetic holders are rigid and heavier than toploaders — they won't survive loose in a standard envelope. Wrap the mag holder in bubble wrap or use the Armalope Parcel Mailer for 360° rigid shipping protection. Ship via USPS Ground Advantage or equivalent tracked parcel service — do not ship magnetic holders via eBay Standard Envelope (too thick and rigid). For holder surface protection during shipping, add a Glove-Fit Sleeve before wrapping.
Can I store magnetic holders long-term?
Absolutely — that's what they're built for. The archival-safe, UV-blocking acrylic protects your card indefinitely. For long-term storage, keep mag holders in a cool, dry environment away from extreme temperature swings. Stack them carefully or store upright in a storage box. Add Glove-Fit Sleeves to prevent the holders themselves from scratching against each other during storage. A card in a proper magnetic holder with a Glove-Fit sleeve is one of the most protected states a raw card can be in. Full storage guide.
How do magnetic holders compare to graded card slabs?
Magnetic holders are for raw cards you want to display and protect at the highest level without sending them to a grading company. Graded slabs (PSA, BGS, SGC, CGC) are sealed, authenticated, and numerically graded cases that add verified condition scoring and authentication. If you want to display a raw card in premium protection right now — magnetic holder. If you want an authenticated grade and plan to sell based on condition — send it for grading. Many collectors mag-hold their best raw cards while deciding whether to submit for grading. For protecting graded slabs, check our HERO Diamond Shell cases.

Magnetic Holder Size Guide — 35PT to 360PT for Every Card Thickness
Choosing the right magnetic holder PT size follows the same logic as toploaders — match the holder to the card's thickness. Here's the complete sizing guide:
35PT — Standard base cards, inserts, refractors, parallels, Pokémon standard, MTG standard. Includes Precise-Fit sleeve. 55PT — Slightly thick inserts, some refractors with extra foil layers. Includes Precise-Fit sleeve. 75PT — Jersey and relic cards, standard game-used memorabilia. 100PT — Multi-layer patch cards, thick memorabilia inserts. 130PT — Heavy memorabilia, thick sticker autographs. 180PT — Very thick memorabilia and premium hits. 260PT and 360PT — The thickest cards in the hobby.
The holder should close flush with no gaps and no force required. If the magnets don't click shut cleanly, the card is too thick — step up one PT size. If there's visible space around the card, step down. For chrome and autograph cards at any PT, use the included Precise-Fit sleeve or an Easy Glide penny sleeve for surface protection.
