Frequently Asked Questions

What is a toploader and why do I need one?

A toploader is a rigid plastic card holder that protects trading cards from bending, surface scratches, and edge damage. Unlike penny sleeves alone, toploaders provide structural rigidity that prevents your cards from getting damaged during storage, display, or shipping. If you own cards worth more than a few dollars, toploaders are a critical piece of protection.

What does PT mean for toploaders?

PT stands for "point" — a measurement of thickness where 1 point = 1/1000th of an inch. A standard 35PT toploader fits regular trading cards (base cards, most inserts). Thicker cards like relics, patches, and memorabilia cards require higher PT ratings: 55PT, 75PT, 100PT, 130PT, or even 180PT. Always match your card's thickness to the correct PT toploader for a snug, protective fit.

What's the difference between standard and premium toploaders?

Standard toploaders provide basic rigid protection with crystal-clear polypropylene construction. Premium UV Shield toploaders add 99.99% UV light filtration and a seamless frame design that eliminates the rough interior edge found on competitor products. If your card has significant value or you're displaying it long-term, UV Shield Premium is the move.

How do I know which toploader fits my card?

Most standard trading cards (Pokémon, sports base cards, Magic: The Gathering) fit a 35PT toploader. If your card feels noticeably thicker — jersey patches, relics, autograph sticker cards — you'll need thick toploaders (55PT–180PT). Booklet cards, oversized cards, and mini cards require specialty sizes. When in doubt, measure the card thickness with calipers or check our sizing guide.

Are Card Shellz toploaders better than Ultra Pro?

We engineered our toploaders to fix what Big Hobby gets wrong. Our UV Shield line blocks 99.99% of UV light — Ultra Pro and BCW standard toploaders offer zero UV protection. Our seamless frame design eliminates the interior ridge that scratches cards during insertion. Same clarity, better protection, better build quality. We're not here to match the big guys — we're here to outperform them.

What specialty toploader sizes do you carry?

Our specialty line covers card formats that standard toploaders can't fit: booklet cards, oversized cards (like Topps Big or tobacco-sized), mini cards, and other non-standard dimensions. Check our specialty toploaders collection for the full range of available sizes.

Do you have toploaders for booklet cards?

Yes. Booklet cards — those fold-out multi-panel hits from products like National Treasures and Flawless — need wider toploaders that accommodate the unfolded dimensions. Our booklet card toploaders are specifically sized for these premium hits so you're not forcing a $500 card into a holder that doesn't fit.

What about oversized or mini cards?

We carry toploaders for multiple non-standard card sizes including oversized formats and mini cards. Standard 3"×4" toploaders don't work for these — you'll end up with a card rattling around or not fitting at all. Matched sizing means proper protection with no excess space.

Can I get toploaders for non-standard card sizes?

Our specialty collection covers the most common non-standard sizes in the hobby. If you have a specific size need we don't currently carry, reach out to our team — we're always evaluating new sizes based on collector demand. Card Shellz exists to solve the problems Big Hobby ignores.

Trading Card Toploaders — Rigid Protection for Every Card in Your Collection

Toploaders are the foundation of any serious trading card protection setup. A rigid plastic card holder keeps your cards flat, prevents corner dings, and shields surfaces from the handling damage that kills resale value. Whether you're protecting a bulk Pokémon collection, storing sports cards for PSA or BGS submission, or displaying your best MTG hits, the right toploader is non-negotiable.

Card Shellz builds toploaders for collectors who've already been burned by the cheap stuff. Our lineup covers every format and thickness: standard 35PT toploaders for base cards, inserts, and any regular-thickness trading card; thick toploaders from 55PT to 180PT for relics, patches, and memorabilia cards; UV Shield Premium toploaders with 99.99% UV filtration for displayed and high-value cards; StandLoaders with a built-in display stand; SlimLoaders for space-efficient storage and shipping; and specialty toploaders for booklet cards, oversized formats, and non-standard sizes.

The 35PT toploader is the industry standard for a reason — it fits the vast majority of sports cards, Pokémon, and TCG cards right out of the pack. Always pair your card with a penny sleeve before loading it into any toploader. The sleeve creates a frictionless barrier between the card surface and the toploader walls, preventing micro-scratches during insertion and removal. This two-layer approach — sleeve inside toploader — is the minimum protection standard for any card you care about.

For PSA and BGS submissions, standard 35PT toploaders are accepted and preferred. Make sure your card sits snugly without rattling; excessive movement during shipping is a common source of submission damage. If the card slides around, size down or add a second penny sleeve layer to take up the slack.

Not sure which toploader fits your card? Use the tab navigation above to browse by type, or check our guides on The Bunker for PT sizing charts, protection setups, and submission prep tips. For soft protection that works alongside toploaders, our full card sleeves collection covers inner sleeves, deck protectors, and specialty sleeve sizes.

Specialty Toploaders — Booklet, Oversized, Mini, and Non-Standard Card Protection

The hobby doesn't only produce standard 3.5"×2.5" trading cards. Booklet cards, oversized inserts, vintage tobacco-sized cards, mini cards, and other non-standard formats require specialty toploaders matched to their actual dimensions. A standard toploader either won't fit them or leaves so much empty space that the card moves around and sustains damage. Card Shellz carries specialty formats for the card sizes that the big supply companies treat as afterthoughts.

Booklet card toploaders accommodate the fold-out multi-panel hits from high-end products like National Treasures, Flawless, and Immaculate. These cards open like a book with multiple panels, often containing autographs, relics, and printing plates. Some booklet cards command four to five figures at auction — they deserve purpose-built protection, not an improvised stack of penny sleeves and tape.

Oversized toploaders handle card formats that exceed standard dimensions: Topps Big cards, vintage tobacco cards, promo cards, and exhibition-format releases. Standard toploaders will swallow these cards with excessive play, allowing movement that damages corners and edges. Properly sized specialty toploaders give you a snug fit with minimal play.

Mini card toploaders address the opposite problem — card formats smaller than standard that rattle around in a regular 35PT holder. Before loading any specialty card, use an appropriately sized sleeve from our card sleeves collection — even an imperfect sleeve fit is better than bare card contact against the toploader walls. Matching holder size to card size is the only way to prevent the movement damage that makes non-standard card protection so tricky with generic solutions.

For thick non-standard cards, specialty toploaders overlap with our thick toploader range — booklet cards in particular often require both a non-standard width and a thick PT rating. Browse the full toploaders collection to find the right combination. For standard card protection, see our 35PT standard toploaders. Check The Bunker for specialty card protection guides covering booklets, vintage formats, and non-standard sizing tips.
